Drug Detox Views - Addiction and Abuse Caused by Innocent BystandersA recent article regarding the Purdue Pharma OxyContin hearings says that justice department superiors disagreed with their prosecutors on the severity of the proposed charges. There are also implications that politicking was behind the disagreement. Frankly, it s hard to believe otherwise: pharma is a very powerful lobby and, really, that s pretty old news. Anyone who doesn t think pharma and other mega industry have influence just isn t paying attention. All that aside, one sentence in the article struck me: Lawyers for the executives (of Purdue) have said they were innocent bystanders. Poor guys. God knows how many people are now suffering from OxyContin addiction and looking for drug detox and rehab facilities to get them out of the mess, and Purdue s top execs had nothing to do with it. How s that for responsibility? The company s top lawyer, the person ultimately responsible for protecting the company from exactly this type of incident, knew nothing about whether or not the product was being misrepresented. The president, ultimately responsible for revenue, profitability and growth of the organization, knew nothing of the details of the success of a major product on the market. The chief medical officer knew nothing about the dangers of the drug or its potential for abuse and addiction. I don t think so. They re just sitting there innocently counting their money and they must have counted a fair bit of it if they can come up with $34.5 million in fines while drug detox and rehab program admission statistics for OxyContin addiction and abuse soar to heights greater than all other drugs combined, hospital emergency rooms cope with 30,000 OxyContin-related incidents, and the OxyContin death toll quadruples.
And we re putting guys in prison when they re caught with a few ounces of marijuana. Yes, maybe there was just a little bit of politicking. So, now it s up to us. You and me. If you or someone you know has a problem with OxyContin addiction or abuse, find a good drug detox and rehab program and get started. Don t join the ranks of innocent bystanders. Step up to the plate. Someone s life may depend on it
